Rob, a beautiful reflection and tribute to your daughter, mother, and to you for the depth in which you inhabit the world and your experience. I’m at the airport heading out in spring break with my twin daughters - 13 years old. This sentence stopped me, and contributes to me as a father: “This beautiful, smart, hilarious, and complicated girl, who is deep in the trenches of figuring things out, so often feeling like it’s all too much.”
This is so wonderful to read, James. Thank you. I'm so glad to hear you're off on some adventures with your daughters. Here's wishing all of you an amazing trip. 🙏
Reading this I’m an elder, a parent, and a churning teen all at once, tears falling on all sides and in between the fertile cracks of shared beauty, joy and relationship. Deeply touched by this Rob.
Wonderful tribute to your mom, Rob. I laughed out loud at the thought of your daughter (and you 35 years ago) being immersed in your own world and not enjoying the view (or not wanting to admit you were.) That is SO relatable! Sounds like you really did make that connection with your daughter, though. I can feel your pride in her, and your sadness that your Mom couldn't be there. Beautiful!
This was beautiful, Rob. It brought shivers up my arms and water welling up behind my eyes. Such a lovely reflection and so well written. I'm so happy to see you publishing :)
I love the cadence and rhythm you evoke with the words you use, Rob. There's the movement, slowing or speeding of your daughter and the car. With your time references, you slowed down the important memories to relish. As an image person, it felt like you had remote-controlled access to your memories to FF or RWD to the best bits (Gen X VHS player in my head!), or maybe you had a musical tempo playing in the background? En tout cas...regardless, thank you a beautiful read
Thank you, Victoria—this is so wonderful to read. I'm so glad it resonated. Love the VHS FF/REW image—there's definitely some of that and musical tempo, too. Anyway, thanks for the lovely, thoughtful comment. I appreciate the read, and look forward to reading your work.
Thank, you Rob! I hope my articles, the resources and insights from experts resonate. I look forward to reading more of your work and very glad I found your publication via Lindsay today. Being on this side of MANY blue light emergency situations in the UK, thank you for the volunteer work you do as an EMT.
So vivid and poignant, Rob. And I do relate to parenting while thinking of one’s own impermanent parents. And the child gleefully telling you about their plans for their own death!

And this has touched me this morning, reading this. I'm always so appreciative of your amazing, thoughtful comments. 🙏
What a beautiful post, it made me cry.
🙏 I'm so glad it resonated, Lucy.
I relate so much. My daughter was once so engrossed in her book while camping that she didn't see a black bear run right in front of her. 😂
I got the chills reading this. Beautifully told, Rob!
I love this. Hey, at least it was a book, and not a phone, right? So glad this one resonated. I appreciate the kind words!
Beautiful. You have a wonderful way of connecting present to past, past to present.
Thanks so much, my friend. So happy to have you reading along.
Beautiful Rob. You paint such a picture with your words. Really well done.
Thank you, my friend. So glad you're here. 🙏

Thanks so much, Cherie! This is wonderful to read. So pleased it connected. ❤️
